Madras Pavilion

Address:
3910 Kirby

Site: madraspavilion.us

Notes: They are really nice about pointing out which items in the buffet don't contain ghee (clarified butter). On the menu, the Gobi Manchurian is what you need.

I haven't been to the Houston location, but Madras Pavillion's San Antonio restaurant is probably the most vegan-friendly of the San Antonio's six or so Indian restaurants. They are also good at including more items on their menu and buffet than just the standards people are used to seeing at every Indian restaurant in the US.

I have to say I had a horrible experience at Madras last time I went. The waitress didn't understand what "no dairy" meant due to a language barrier and when I complained about something soaking in obvious yogurt the manager came out and said the naan, samosas, and Channa masala all contained cream or ghee but brought out what we had originally ordered and expected us to pay for it. Then they added 15% to the total because they are increasing their prices but haven't changed the menu yet. I won't be going there again.

I live in Denver now, but I very much miss all the restaurants in Houston, especially Madras. I wish there was something in Denver that even approximated the wonderful food at Madras Pavilion.

I just moved back to Houston from Austin, and the Austin Madras didn't know what vegan meant. different answers every time I went, and always left with a stomach ache. blech. I'm nervous, but maybe I'll try the Houston location again.

They definitely don't offer a consistent answer as to what's vegan on the menu or in the buffet. Once I went and was told that about five different items I'd been told were vegan and had eaten again and again were not vegan. The manager that informed me of this could only point out one or two curries that actually were vegan and neither appealed to me. I've spent a ton of money and sent a ton of people to this restaurant. I shan't make either mistake again.

Jason that seems to be a problem with the entire Madras chain. Kinda depressing that an all vegetarian place would be so sketchy for vegans. Oh well. Now that I've become addicted to Shri Balaji Bhavan, I never go anywhere else.
